Alongside his pastoral calling, Stephen served in the Army National Guard for 32 years. He retired in 2020 with the rank of Colonel and as the Senior Army Chaplain for the California Army National Guard. In this dual role, both in the pulpit and on the front lines, Stephen ministered to soldiers, families, and communities from all walks of life, bringing the hope of Christ into both peaceful and difficult places.

Stephen earned his Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Formation from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2007. He is passionate about teaching theology, church history, and the Bible in a way that brings clarity and connection. Whether in a classroom, a church, or a conversation, he often says his goal is to “put the cookies on the lowest shelf where everyone can reach them.”

He and his wife Sherry have been married since August 8, 1988 ‘a date they chose for its symbolism of eternity and new beginnings (and because it’s easy to remember!). Together, they’ve raised three wonderful children and are now the proud grandparents of nine. After over two decades of life and ministry in San Diego, Stephen remains grateful for the opportunity to serve, teach, and write in ways that help others explore the life-giving grace of Christ.

Stephen’s hope is that those who visit this site, read his words, or hear him speak would come away not just informed, but inspired, encouraged, and spiritually thirsty for more of God.
